I decided to sit for a few minutes on the steps in from of Kane Hall for this observation study. The first thing I noticed was the temperature. It was warm out, but because it's Seattle, there was also a crisp breeze. I could see Mt. Rainer behind Drumheller Fountain. These are pretty usual sights for me because they are stereotypically Seattle.
There were a lot of people milling about in Red Square-- a lot of tourists snapping their usual thousand photos of Suzzallo and a lot of visitors because of SigEp's car show that was to start in a few hours. Clearly I have judgements attached to these types of individuals. I associate tourist with annoying photography and I associate visitors with "others," as if they are encroaching on a campus that is solely my territory i.e.: they don't belong.
The new things I noticed were mostly detailed things-- I noticed the disagreement a visitor was having with her 5 or 6-year old child. I noticed that she was carrying a huge bag, likely for the rest of her group that was off visiting something else (my suspicions were confirmed 5 minutes later when five more people joined her. I also noticed the bird noises more and more coming from the seagulls roaming around. It was a strange experience.
