Graffiti near River Spree
Our first week in Berlin has flown by-- I've already seen and done so much. Things have been going very smoothly. I've really enjoyed the relaxed nature of the city. Maybe it's just because I'm not in "school", but my stress level is nonexistent. My sleep has also been lacking because I just don't want to miss anything! Berlin is the kind of city that only really gets going at 3am. I'm a big believer in experiencing the culture of a country, so if that means staying up late, I do it. For example, in Berlin, I don't order mixed drinks, I order beer. I don't go to Starbucks, I go to random cafes. I've eaten more spatzle, currywurst, and doner than I can count. The assimilation experience has been quite fun
One of the first things I noticed about Berlin was the sheer number of smokers and the lack of smoke free bars/restaurants. That's definitely a cultural difference I'll have to get accustomed to.... One of my favorite parts of Berlin is all the outdoor seating. Everyone just lounges about. Plush food and drink is so cheap here! I've gotten an entire meal here with a drink for less than 5 euro. And no one is on their phone either. In the US everyone's phone would be in hand. I like that people here seem to have less of a tie to technology. That being said, the Wifi is atrocious throughout Berlin. I have no clue how anyone gets anything done. efficiently.
In general I've just really enjoyed being thrown into a totally different environment. All of the people here are so cool-- very educated and very blunt. I'm looking forward to continuing to explore the city.
